The Focus was nothing short of a revelation when it was launched, offering a superb blend of practicality, comfort and keen handling. A great all-rounder, it continues to be a hugely popular model and with a wide range of engines and trims there's something to suit everyone. Easy to live with and simple to drive, the Focus makes an ideal small family car with the 1.6-litre and 1.8-litre Zetec models the pick of the range. There are also some excellent TDCI diesels which are refined and ideal for long distance travel.

Buying used

The Focus makes one of the best all-rounders on the used market. There are plenty around so don't feel pressured into paying over the odds - there's likely to be an equally good example not far away, while it's a favourite at car supermarkets. The 1.6-litre and 1.8-litre petrol models are the best choices if you don't intend to do big miles.

There's steady demand for the Focus and dealers and private buyers both love them. But you'll be competing with 100 other cars in your area so don't ask too much. Zetec and LX petrol cars are the quickest to sell while diesel models will always be popular.
