Ford Fusion (02-12) - Review

Borrowing the handling characteristics of the Fiesta - as well as adding more headroom and luggage capacity – the Fusion is a good choice for buyers who want a tidy little car with extra interior space. The Fusion offers a taller, more practical alternative with a higher roof, more upright seating position and a decent boot. It's not the best looking small car around however and another criticism is that the base model's lack of standard equipment is disappointing, whereas the top spec is brimming with an unnecessary level of gadgetry. There are some frugal engines offered too, but the 1.4 TDCi is very sluggish and best avoided.

Safety

The Fusion has a decent four-star Euro NCAP crash test score, helped by the reinforced side impact door beams and rigid body structure. The seats are fitted with anti-submarining ramps, to increase occupant safety by preventing passengers from sliding under their seatbelts in head-on collisions. Although side and curtain airbags are optional, it is otherwise very well equipped. Security is pretty good too and all Fusion models come with remote central locking and an immobiliser.

Reliability

The Fusion is as reliable as the Fiesta, with just occasional warranty niggles. There are reports of the occasional dash or door rattle, but any problems shouldn’t be too severe.
