Ford Galaxy (06 on) - Review

Review by Ben Wall on
Last Updated: 24 November 2010
The Ford Galaxy is a very popular people carrier and it's not hard to see why. Practical, spacious and car-like to drive it comes with a great range of engines including some very economical diesels. All models come with seven independent seats and the rear five easily fold flat to create a huge load space while there are more than 30 stowage compartments on board. Ford actually has two large people carriers in its range - the S-MAX and the Galaxy. They're based on the same underpinnings, but the Galaxy is the more practical of the two. Unfortunately it looks quite boxy as a result, but it does mean there's plenty of space for all passengers. Ford revised the Galaxy in 2010 with chrome grille bars and LED rear lights. A new petrol and diesel engine were also introduced, along with Ford’s Powershift double-clutch gearbox.

Buying new

The Galaxy is a true seven-seater that's genuinely good to drive - a feat few other people carriers can match. The 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine is impressive and comes with the Powershift double clutch gearbox as standard, but the TDCi diesels are the ones to go for if you're after economy. Aim for a decent discount or at least some optional extras thrown in for free.

Buying used

There are plenty of models on the second hand market so don't rush in and buy the first one you see. The entry-level model was originally LX but this was later replaced by Edge, however it's actually the top of the range Ghia which is the most popular. All the diesel engines are good but be aware that the 1.8 TDCi comes in two outputs of 100bhp or 125bhp - the latter is also available with a five-speed or a six-speed manual gearbox. In 2010 the 1.8 TDCi was replaced by the 2.0 TDCi which is available with 115bhp, 140bhp or 163bhp.

Selling

You'll have few problems selling a Galaxy. It's a popular choice among family buyers and is a well known name too. The diesels will command the most and sell the quickest but the EcoBoost, introduced in 2010, is impressively economical for an engine with more than 200bhp.
