Ford Ka (09 on) - Review

The original Ford Ka was a hugely popular model, especially among those wanting a cheap to run and easy to drive small car. Its replacement builds on those strong foundations, but offers better comfort, refinement and fuel economy. It is certainly a much more grown up car, particularly inside thanks to the well built and neatly laid out cabin. Of course it retains those cheeky looks of the original and is easy and enjoyable to drive, especially in town, while the supple ride means it's incredibly comfortable. The Ka was actually developed alongside the Fiat 500 and uses the same petrol and diesel engines as the Italian hatch. Both are smooth and economical, but offer enough pace to make motorway journeys relaxing. Cheap to run, well built and fun to drive, the Ka is a superb small hatchback.

Buying new

The Ka is not quite as cheap as the original model, but then it is far more sophisticated and comfortable. Still, there will be little room for manoeuvre when it comes to haggling - especially if you're after an entry-level model. There's plenty of options available but if you want air conditioning as standard you'll have to opt for the Style+ model. The diesel is only available in range-topping Zetec trim - and pushes the price to above £11,000.

Buying used

If you're after a cheap to run but high-quality small car, then a used Ka makes the perfect choice. There are very few diesels around but it's worth considering whether you need one as the petrol is cheaper and still very frugal. Most cars will be 1.2 Zetec models, which come well equipped. If you're looking at a Studio or Style be aware that air conditioning is an optional extra.

Selling

The popular Ford Ka will always be an easy car to sell, especially considering its low running costs. The diesel engine will command a healthy premium over the petrol, but whichever model you have, it will sell quickly.
