Honda Accord Saloon (98-03) - Review Review by Parkers on 01 January 1998 The Accord looks no more adventurous than before, but underneath the sleekly anonymous exterior are sophisticated VTEC engines. The chassis has also been revised, so although only the Type-R looks the part, even the 1.8i is a fine drive. And there are now practical hatchbacks, too. As always, overall quality is superb, and Accord is very competitively priced considering all that it offers. 4 out of 5 Other Honda reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 4 out of 5 Performance Lively high-revving VTEC engines are Honda's strong point, with greater output, efficiency and flexibility than most rivals; Accord's 1.8i, 2.0i and 2.2i units are exemplary. All are capable of 0-60 mph in 10 seconds or less - the fastest is the Type-R 2.2 at 7.2 seconds. The 1.8 is eager without being harsh; the 2.0i is the best-selling choice - especially with the refined auto 'box - and the 2.2 provides spirited fun. Loses a point for no diesel option. 3.5 out of 5 Handling There is little roll; and Accord always feels balanced and safe. But the gearbox comes in for some criticism - it’s not as smooth as most rivals - and the clutch feels sticky at times. The ride can be a bit crashy around town and on poorly-laid A and B roads, but is fine for the rest of the time. Car Valuations Find used car prices with Parkers accurate car valuations.
