Honda FR-V (04-09) - Review

Clever packaging - perhaps inspired by the Fiat Multipla - has given Honda a six-seat people carrier that can also carry luggage for all its occupants, making it more practical than similar sized people carriers that have three rows of seats but a tiny boot. The FR-V seats three abreast in two rows, but the middle rear seat also slides back to ensure sufficient leg room. It means six people plus luggage can be transported in a vehicle taking up no more road space than a typical family hatchback. However, the middle seat in the front isn't really practical, especially not for regular use. In 2007 the model got the excellent i-CTDi diesel engine it desperately needed while the looks were also subtly tweaked with new headlights and rear light clusters.

Comfort

Unlike some people carriers, every passenger on board gets a full-size individual seat (as opposed to a bench seat). They're comfortable enough for longer journeys, and the middle seat in the front and back can slide to ensure both occupants have enough leg room. However, using the middle seat in the front means there's limited shoulder room for the driver and passenger - so the driver ends up pressed against the door. Thankfully, on the road the FR-V is - on the whole - very quiet with engine and road noise kept low, although wind noise can be intrusive at higher speeds. Howe

Practicality

The FR-V has a versatile interior and the centre seat in both rows can slide backwards while the seats in the back can be easily folded flat into the floor. This, coupled with the low lip of the boot, makes it easy to load. There are plenty of cubby bins in the cabin, including a drinks holder in the front that's large enough for three bottles, plus underseat storage trays. The centre front seat can also be flipped down to become a large armrest or small table for the driver and front passenger.

Behind the wheel

As you'd expect of a modern Honda, the quality of the interior finish is top class with high grade materials used throughout. It's not the most stylish or modern of cabins but everything is well laid out with the stereo and air conditioning controls placed high up in the middle of the central console. However the raked rear screen impairs rear visibility (especially when it’s fully loaded) and the curved rear glass distorts the view looking back.
