Hyundai Coupé (96-02) - Review

Review by Parkers on
How has Hyundai made the medium-coupe concept work in the UK, when Ford, Fiat and Peugeot have all made excellent cars without sales success? Simple. Make it look like a Ferrari, give it a decent level of kit and sell it at a price people can afford. It was the first Hyundai with pose factor.

Comfort

Like many cars this size, it's a four-seater in name. But the reality, the two rear seats are compromised by the sloping roof-line and limited legroom. But if it's used mainly as a two-seater, it's better, with a spacious cabin and lots of legroom.

Practicality

The boot is surprisingly large, has a wide opening and the tailgate lifts high. Boot is large enough to transport a variety of loads, from the weekly shop to medium-sized boxes. No-one should find the space inadequate. There's a also a large glovebox and places for your coins and oddments.

Behind the wheel

The interior really looks dated up against modern coupe offerings (including Hyundai's latest - and very good - Coupe). Some of the switches are in awkward places and the buttons have a cheap feel to them. Models with cloth trim feel even worse. But there's a good driving position, good forward visibility (not so good looking backwards) and decent stereo on top models.
