The ix35 may effectively be the replacement for the underwhelming Tucson - but it's also much more than that. It represents a huge leap forward for Hyundai in terms of interior quality, exterior design and refinement. Elements such as the distinctive grille and modern cabin design make their debut in the ix35 and it leads the way in terms of economy and emissions too with impressively efficient and cheap to run engines. Despite its off-roader looks, most ix35s are two-wheel drive and its surprisingly compact with an overall length shorter than a Vauxhall Astra, making it easy to park. Comfortable and quiet on the move, there's little to find fault with and the icing on the cake is the ix35's superb value for money. It comes incredibly well equipped, has a five-year warranty as standard and is easily a match for more mainstream alternatives from Toyota and Volkswagen.

Buying new

The ix35 is one of the new breed of Hyundai models. It's still great value and well equipped, but it also has stylish looks and a high-class interior. Prices are very competitive with the entry-level models undercutting the cheapest Ford Focus, yet with far more standard equipment. As a result, getting a large discount could be difficult, but Hyundai dealers usually have come sort of offer running whether it be low finance rates or an extra part exchange allowance.

Buying used

As you'd expect with a family car of this size, it's the diesel engine that is the most common choice. The most popular model is the 2.0 CRDi 2WD Style which is also the most economical, but the Premium is the one to go for if you want extra kit - it has cruise control, 18-inch wheels and a panoramic sunroof. The two option packs - Multimedia and Individual - are only available with the Premium trim but are well worth looking out for, especially the Multimedia Pack which includes touchscreen sat nav and a reversing camera.

Selling

Hyundai's reputation for quality is on the up and the ix35 is a stylish family car that comes well equipped and is cheap to run. As a result, you should have few problems selling one, although most buyers will want the CRDi diesel rather than the petrol. The five-year warranty is a strong selling point as it can be transferred onto new owners.
