Hyundai Matrix (01-10) - Review Review by David Ross on 30 January 2009 The Matrix is a compact people carrier similar in size to the Citroen Xsara Picasso. It does look a little strange from the outside but the tall profile means there's plenty of interior space, especially for rear passengers, along with a half-decent boot. As is the case with all Hyundai's, it is well equipped and good value, plus newer versions come with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty as standard. Unfortunately it's poor to drive, so despite a smooth ride, it's not an enjoyable car on anything other than motorways. The diesels are the better choice but it's best going for a later CRDi model rather than the earlier CRTD. 2.5 out of 5 Other Hyundai reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 3 out of 5 Comfort On smooth and straight roads the Matrix is comfortable but it rarely feels refined and quiet. All the engines are noisy, in particular automatic petrol cars, while the tall shape means wind noise is excessive. The cabin is roomy though and there's plenty of leg and headroom for both passengers in the front and those in the back. The seats are quite soft and cosseting too, although they do lack support which is noticeable on longer journeys. The rear seats do fold and tumble, but they don't fold into the floor and aren't removable either. However the floor in the rear is flat so three can easily sit in the back in relative comfort. Luggage room isn't bad either with 345-litres available and the rear seats slide and can split 60/40. Get a Hyundai Matrix valuation View full gallery How does the boot space compare? The instrument cluster is located in a pod on the middle of the dashboard and the ventilation controls are easy to use, but aside from that there's little sophistication. The driving position is quite high up, giving you good all round visibility, but it's not a cabin you'd want to spend long journeys in.
