Hyundai Terracan (03-07) - Review

Review by Parkers on
Who said off-roaders have gone soft? Terracan is proof that the macho 4x4 still exists, and if you need a workhorse rather than fashion accessory, it fits the bill. It's cheap to buy, stacked with kit and quite capable in the rough stuff. And used prices are enticing, making it a great second car for towing horseboxes or caravans. On the down side it's not particularly nice to drive, nor comfortable.

Comfort

Plenty of room for two adults in the back (or three children). Centre armrest and electric rear windows. Side steps will help kids climb into the rear.

Practicality

Loads of room inside for a big family's luggage (or a couple of well-groomed sheep) and there's a cargo net to stop it sliding all over the place. A few little cubby holes for bits and pieces and some cup holders.

Behind the wheel

It's certainly no BMW X5, but Hyundai has done well in spreading the budget between clever 4x4 technology and luxury interior gizmos. Those seats look plain but were comfy for more than a couple of hours. However, fake wood trim clashes with fake carbon-fibre dials set in acres of genuine plastic. If you've driven an old Isuzu or Daihatsu Fourtrak, then the Terracan will seem luxurious. Everything is easily reached and clearly laid out. Most people will find the steering column switchgear a bit awkward - it's reversed on Korean cars so the indicator/lights stalk is on the right-hand side. Visibility is good, parking surprisingly easy, although rear-parking sensors would improve it even more.
