Summary***--

  • Comfort, refinement and other traditional Jaguar attributes in a compact package
  • Traditional styling off-putting for new customers, cramped inside compared with newer rivals

The Jaguar X-type was launched in 2001 as the car that would take the British firm towards unprecedented sales success worldwide, but it failed to hit the mark. Jaguar was never able to compete with the breadth of range that BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz were able to offer customers, but that isn't to say the X-type is a bad car. It is exceptionally refined, well made, and manages to balance excellent comfort with pretty sharp handling. Changes to the range in 2008 allow a greater degree of personalisation for customers, making the X-type's interior feel more special than that of any rival.
