Jaguar XJ Saloon (94-03) - Review

Review by Parkers on
This XJ continues the Jaguar tradition of grace, pace and luxury. Revisions in 1997 refined it further, with V8 engines and a superb five-speed automatic gearbox. But at the competitive top end of the modern luxury car market - and challenged by the Audi A8 and BMW 7-Series - the XJ's image seems just a little old-fashioned. A favourite with Government ministers, but don't let that put you off.

Safety

ABS, twin airbags, side airbags and automatic electronic stability control from September '97. The 4.0 has traction control. No test conducted by Euro NCAP. All have alarm and immobiliser system but later cars are more secure, with shielded deadlocks. Owners of top models may have fitted a tracking system.

Reliability

Jaguar isn't famed for its reliability, but the XJ has suffered no major faults. However, regular specialist servicing is essential and despite huge improvements build quality is still not quite up to German standards.
