Summary****-

  • Off-road ability, improved interior, strong performance, generous equipment, rugged charm
  • A bit thirsty for a modern diesel

The growth of the Jeep range in the UK has allowed the company to take the 2008 Cherokee up-market. With the Patriot and Compass occupying the price bracket that the cheaper Cherokee used to, Jeep launches its 2008 version as a single well-appointed model with automatic transmission and electric canvas roof as the only options. It has a much plusher interior than before (although perhaps not quite with the same elegance of execution as the best Japanese and European rivals) and goes back to the familiar squared off styling that first make the Cherokee popular in the UK in the mid 1990s. Still near unstoppable off road, and with much improved manners on road, the 2008 is Jeep's most competent effort yet.
