Jeep Cherokee (93-01) - Review

Review by Parkers on
Demand for stylish four-wheel drive transport took off rapidly in the early '90s, and Chrysler Jeep seized the opportunity to introduce the proven Cherokee to British buyers in 1993. It competes directly with the Land Rover Freelander for the affections of city-folk and suburbanites who want a good looking, well packaged vehicle and aren't too worried about the running costs. Cherokee is also a competent off-roader, though country motorists looking for a workhorse will probably look elsewhere.

Comfort

Cosseting seats; luggage area impaired by vertical spare wheel. Rear passenger space not as roomy as you would expect. Ride is typical of a heavy-duty 4x4 - suspension seems to crash over nasty bumps and can be bouncy over undulating surfaces.

Practicality

Excellent off-road, if that's what you need the Cherokee for. Also passes for a family car with reasonable luggage space and so-so rear-seat accommodation. Feels more compact than it looks when driving, so not intimidating to use around town.

Behind the wheel

Robust, but dated looking interior will not please everyone. Manual 2.5 petrol and diesel models have an agricultural feel to the gearchange. Driving position and visibility is good.
