Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 (06-10) - Review Review by Ben Wall on 08 December 2006 Last Updated: 12 February 2009 Jeep's high performance version of the Grand Cherokee, badged SRT-8, is produced in very limited numbers, making it a rare 4x4. With a hugely powerful V8 engine along with heavily modified suspension and steering, it's thunderously quick with 0-62mph coming up in just five seconds. However, it loses all of the regular Grand Cherokee's impressive off-road capability. That may make it seem rather pointless to most potential buyers, but the fact that it can out accelerate a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S - for half the price - ought to tempt some. But considering the sky-high running costs, it seems a pointless extravagance. 3.5 out of 5 Other Jeep reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 5 out of 5 Performance While the Grand Cherokee isn't lacking in performance, especially the 5.7-litre V8 model, the SRT-8 is in a different league. Its 6.1-litre V8 produces out 420bhp, which is sufficient for it to hit 62mph in five seconds, making it as quick as the more powerful Mercedes ML63 AMG. Aerodynamics are improved by special front and rear bumpers and side skirts that are unique to the SRT-8, helping it power its way to a maximum speed of 152mph. It uses a five-speed automatic gearbox and has so much urge available, that it's rare for the driver to feel the need to manually take control of the gears by using the sequential mode. Hard acceleration is accompanied by a loud, thunderous engine note from the big V8. View full gallery 3.5 out of 5 Handling The SRT-8 is very different from standard Grand Cherokee. While it's still technically a four-wheel drive car, it is in no way intended to go off road. It sits lower, on suspension designed to minimise body roll during high speed cornering, rather than soak up ruts and bumps. It corners surprisingly effectively given its relative height and bulk, but the steering isn't particularly responsive so the SRT-8 is most at home charging in a straight line.
