Jeep Grand Cherokee (05-10) - Review Review by Matthew Proud on 25 June 2008 The Grand Cherokee is a much improved large 4x4, with convincing off-road capabilities and the rugged looks to boot. The familiar shape and style is carried over from the previous model, while a handful of new engines and better road manners have broadened the car's appeal. Four engines are offered but it's the 3.0-litre diesel which is more popular than the three petrol V8 units, as it strikes a more acceptable balance between power and fuel economy. The Grand Cherokee isn’t flawless and rivals like the Land Rover Discovery offer more room and a higher-quality finish for similar money. But overall, it's a stronger package than ever. 3.5 out of 5 Other Jeep reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 4 out of 5 Comfort The previous Grand Cherokee was a comfortable car. This one is improved thanks to its better road-holding, smoother ride and good refinement. Switching from the old five-cylinder diesel to the new V6 has cut engine noise and vibration making it an excellent motorway cruiser, plus wind noise and tyre noise are also low. Front-seat occupants are well catered for in terms of space and although the rear compartment is smaller than you would expect, there is still room for three adults. The decent-sized boot comes with a separate opening tailgate window for easier loading (especially useful in tight multi-storey car parks), while various storage compartments in the cabin mean the Grand Cherokee is suitably practical. Those in need of a seven seater should take at a look at another, larger Jeep alternative in the shape of the Commander. However there are too many hard plastic surfaces to compete with the premium off-roaders that the Grand Cherokee is priced alongside. The range-topping Overland addresses this with attractive two-tone leather, suede seats and real wood trim, but it still lacks that sophisticated feel.
