Kia Sorento (03-09) - Review

Kia's large 4x4 is big on looks, big on value and big on ability. It's a great all-round package and well worth considering, even compared to more established and upmarket models. Along with a spacious cabin, the Sorento comes generously equipped, so it's great value for money while the diesel engine provides strong performance and plenty of pulling power - making it ideal for towing. And even if you'll never need it, it's good to know that this is also one 4x4 that can get you out of trouble if you do get stuck. The model was revised in 2006 with new bumpers and lights while the engines were tweaked to deliver extra power and the interior given a more contemporary look. It was made even better value in January 2010 when the three year warranty was replaced by a seven-year programme.

Buying used

The Sorento went on sale in early 2003, with a facelift in mid 2006 that included uprated safety equipment, slight exterior tweaks and improved power for the 2.5-litre diesel engine. There's plenty of choice on the used market with lots of cars at dealers and available in private sales. The XS trim is the best one to go for: it has all the comforts you want without costing too much. It's unlikely to have been taken off road but it's worth having a check underneath for any damage.

Selling

As an attractive and well equipped 4x4, the Sorento sells in a popular market so should be snapped up easily for a pretty good price. It will need to be in top condition to get maximum money and you may struggle to shift a petrol model quickly. However, if you have a model with a seven-year warranty (from January 2010) this can be a strong selling point, especially as the cover is transferrable to subsequent owners.
