Kia Sportage (10 on) - Review

Review by Parkers on
Last Updated: 17 February 2011
Kia has made a step forward with this, the third-generation Sportage: the first incarnation was quite ugly and the second-generation was found wanting when compared with rivals from Japanese car makers. Toyota, Suzuki and Honda had more competent offerings with the Rav 4, Grand Vitara and CR-V. Then there there was a rush of fashionable crossovers - the Ford Kuga, Hyundai's iX35 as well as the more premium offerings from Audi and BMW. All are reliable, stylish and practical. However, Kia's rivals now have something to truly worry about: the latest Sportage, looks the part and with generous kit levels, acres of space and a decent choice of engines it is raising the bar even higher in the crossover sector. Can it whisk away the top prize in the affordable 4x4 category? Read on to find out.

There's loads of it and if you are disappointed you are expecting way too much. At present Kia is offering the car in one spec: First Edition. It's a fully-specced car and it features full leather upholstery with heated front and rear seats, dual-zone climate control and an audio system that incorporates an RDS radio, a CD player and MP3, USB and iPod connectivity. Bluetooth with voice recognition is also standard. A rear-view safety camera which transmits an image to an LCD colour display integrated into the auto-dimming rear-view mirror is also fitted, and there are also reversing sensors to complete the package. Front foglights and cornering lights ensure good visibility in all conditions, day or night, and the windscreen wipers come on automatically in bad weather. The new Sportage First Edition is also fitted with LED daytime running lights. Steering wheel-mounted controls, electric folding door mirrors and a trip computer add to driver convenience. The First Edition also offers rear privacy glass and 18-inch alloys. Roof rails are standard and there's body-coloured door mirrors with LED indicator strips. However, this was replaced in October 2010 with a choice of '1' , '2' and '3' trim levels to bring it in line with the rest of the Kia range. Opening the trims '1' get plenty of kit including 16-inch alloys, aircon, all-round electric windows, LED running lights, electric door mirrors, leather steering wheel and gearknob, front fog lights and cornering lights, rain sensor wipers, cruise control, Bluetooth and iPod cables. '2' spec models add part-leather upholstery, roof rails and privacy glass, reversing sensors, panoramic sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, folding LED mirrors, a luggage net, vanity mirror illumination, adjustable drivers seat lumbar support and a trip computer. Finally the range-topping '3' models get full leather upholstery with heated front and rear seats, dual-zone climate control, Xenon headlights with washers, auto light control, auto-dimming rear view mirror and 18-inch alloy wheels.
