Land Rover Discovery (89-98) - Review

Halfway between a real working vehicle and a super-posh Range Rover, the Discovery should be the ideal 4x4 for everyone - all the mucky cred, none of the noise. And it almost succeeds. Sales have been good, but the early Discos were let down by poor build and niggling faults. Most should have been fixed by now which actually makes an early model quite an attractive used buy.

Buying used

Don't buy if service history is incomplete, there's rust on doors, tailgate, boot floor or chassis, engine doesn't start easily or there are obvious signs of off road damage. Look out for leaks from sunroof and 'alpine' windows.

Selling

There is an endless demand for good Discoverys which is why it's a good job to keep up the servicing especially on an old one. Just as popular in towns as in the country.
