Land Rover Range Rover (02 on) - Review

The Range Rover is an iconic vehicle and one that's highly regarded as combining true luxury with serious off road ability. The latest model is the best exponent of that thinking yet. Inside it's wonderfully upmarket with a modern and stylish cabin that's superbly finished with expensive-feeling materials. On the road it's just as good with a supremely supple ride and excellent noise insulation, while there's acres of space, particularly for passengers in the back. The downside is a hefty price tag and relatively high running costs. But for sheer class and desirability - few cars can match the Range Rover. In 2008 it was improved even further with the introduction of an excellent TDV8 diesel engine while the model was revised in 2009 with improved handling and a more advanced cabin.

Buying new

The Range Rover has been on sale for a few years now, but getting a discount is no easier now than when it first arrived in showrooms. Still, it's worth trying to get a few optional extras thrown in with the final price. The Autobiography trim is the top of the range model and gets plenty of luxuries - at a cost of course.

Buying used

Launched in 2002, early models are now very affordable, but be aware that the early Td6 diesel engine is very different from the more powerful and refined TDV8. The interior should wear well but it's worth checking for signs of abuse, especially if the car looks like it's been a bit of a family workhorse. Also look out for underbody damage from offroading. The big facelift was in mid-2009 and brought a more sophisticated interior and better handling.

Selling

Buyers will be looking for a posh, luxury icon so any deterioration will not be welcomed or overlooked - it needs to be pristine. It should command a better value than previous generations and used buyers will prefer the TDV8 engine. However, all models are sought after thanks to the desirable Range Rover image.
