Lexus IS Saloon (99-05) - Review

Review by Parkers on
If you fit into Lexus' buyer profile for the IS, you're probably young, affluent and style-conscious. But that was before ex-Rover-driving, sports-casual-wearing Alan Partridge decided to buy one. Image apart, the average buyer opts for IS for its proven reliability and generous equipment. The range was expanded in September 2001 with the addition of the three-litre powerplant and the Sportcross ‘lifestyle estate’ bodystyle.

Comfort

Room in the back for two adults thanks to the transmission tunnel and they won't have loads of room, but those in the front will be fine. Sporting personality means some engine and road noise but this sort of suits it (until you have to do Newbury to Newcastle in one hit). Legroom for rear passengers is a bit tight.

Practicality

Storage inside is fine, boot is a rather awkward shape and has a relatively small opening affecting ultimate practicality - better to get the Sport Cross estate if that’s what you need.

Behind the wheel

The Lexus stylists didn't hold back when they designed the interior. It's a question of taste: some see it as sporty and dynamic; others find it overblown and a little tacky. Steering wheel doesn't adjust for reach but most can get comfortable and otherwise the driving position is sporty and comfortable.
