Lexus LS (07 on) - Review

The huge LS is the Lexus flagship - a luxury four-door saloon that's an alternative to cars such as the BMW 7-Series and Audi A8. The bluff styling is disappointing but the LS offers a superbly equipped and comfortable interior with acres of rear space. Unfortunately while the materials used are first class and the finish excellent, it lacks the style or sophistication of other cars that have a similarly high list price. The Toyota switches and column stalks are a big disappointment. That said, it is supremely comfortable on the move and cocoons passengers from the outside world with superb noise insulation and cosseting seats. It is also the first in its class to offer a fuel-saving petrol-electric 'hybrid' system giving Lexus LS buying an alternative to diesel in the LS600h.

Buying new

The LS is not cheap, but if you compare like-for-like specification, it undercuts the alternatives by a significant margin. It's also well equipped (not always the case with large luxury saloons) so it's no surprise that a discount will be unlikely.

Buying used

The LS will be more accessible as a used car, because it will face steep depreciation in the first year or two of its life. However, although you will still pay relatively high prices choosing a car from the main dealer network, you would be getting some of the best customer service available.

Selling

The biggest problem you'll face is a lack of awareness of the LS. The likes of the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series are more obvious choices. However, canny buyers know how good Lexus models are. Use the bullet-proof build quality, legendary Lexus build quality and generous standard equipment as key selling points.
