Lotus Exige (04 on) - Review

The Exige is the perfect car for the track-day racer or sports car enthusiast. It offers a potent mix of pace and excitement that few other cars - at any price - can match. Current models offer up to 260bhp and a 0-62mph time as low as 4.1 seconds - quick enough to rival supercars that cost five times as much. Much of this is down to its lightweight body which means it's lightning quick off the line and superbly responsive, even at higher speeds. Then there's the sublime handling, precise steering and excellent body control. It's not a car you can live with every day as it's difficult to drive around town, noisy and has little interior space. But as an undiluted sports car, it's difficult to beat.

Buying new

It's not cheap to spec-up an Exige, so unless budget is no barrier, choose your options wisely. Air-con goes against Exige's stripped-out ethos, but as the engine is so close to the driver and the interior easily gets damp (so fogs up), it's a worthwhile addition. The S is quick enough for most buyers but real enthusiasts will want the hardcore Cup 260 - the most extreme version of the Exige. However, it's not cheap with a price tag of more than £40,000.

Buying used

The previous generation Exige was powered by a 1.8-litre Rover-sourced K-Series. This one has a VVT-i from Toyota, which has smooth power and a slightly different character. It holds its value exceptionally well, so be suspicious of any car that's being sold for less than the Parker's dealer or private good price. Avoid any modified cars, especially those with aftermarket engine tweaks.

Selling

There's a strong market for used Exiges. You may need to advertise through the specialist press or owners' club for the best results. Clean, well maintained and unmodified cars will command the highest prices. The S is available in limited numbers and will be more sought-after than the standard model, while the Cup 260 is the hardcore version.
