Good to drive, stylish and sporty look, holds its value well, good equipment levels

Awkward boot shape, noisy at speed, firm ride
This Mazda 2 is a smart alternative to the Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 207. It's a more exciting product than the car it replaces, good to drive and much more in keeping with Mazda's zoom-zoom ethos. Existing 2 owners shouldn't worry, as the new car sticks to its core values. It's still packed with equipment, reasonably priced and well built, while a cheaper three-door version is offered for the first time. Light steering makes it easy to drive in town, yet it's also responsive and nicely weighted, making it great fun on twisting roads. The simple line-up is easy to understand and there's a good choice of frugal and nippy engines.
