Mazda 3 MPS (09 on) - Review

At the top of the Mazda3 range sits the MPS - the high performance model which is an alternative to the likes of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST. One thing it has on its side is power - the turbocharged engine produces an impressive 260bhp which is considerably more than most hot hatchbacks. Compared to the first Mazda3 MPS, this one is far more aggressive and distinctively styled. It's also very well equipped with sat nav, Bluetooth and a Bose stereo system as standard. All this adds up to make the MPS great value for money, especially when compared to more well known performance hatches. However, while it's fast, it doesn't feel very involving to drive and lacks that all important enjoyment element you'd expect from this sort of car.

Buying new

With 260bhp and a long list of standard equipment including Bluetooth and sat nav, the Mazda3 MPS looks very good value with list prices lower than the majority of lower-powered alternatives. However, the SEAT Leon Cupra is cheaper and still boasts 240bhp. It might be possible to negotiate a modest discount from a dealer, but the lack of any optional extras gives you little to bargain with - even metallic paint is included. Unlike most other hatchbacks, the Mazda3 is only available as a five-door.

Buying used

It's good value new, but the MPS is an even better bargain second hand. The best models are likely to be found at Mazda dealers where you can be sure any potential purchase has a proven history plus it will come with a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty as part of the Z-Z+ approved used scheme. On a relatively high performance car such as this, it's worth paying a bit more for that extra peace of mind.

Selling

The biggest challenge when selling an MPS will be the lack of awareness. Most buyers after a fast hatchback will be more familiar with models like the Golf GTI and Astra VXR. The MPS is becoming more widely recognised though, especially among those looking for something a little less obvious than the common hot hatches. The impressive power output and high level of standard kit are good selling tools.
