Mazda 5 (05-10) - Review

The Mazda5 may not be the first car that springs to mind when thinking of a people carrier, but it is one of the best. We'd recommend it over alternatives including the Vauxhall Zafira or Toyota Verso - due mainly to family-friendly features such as rear sliding doors along with simple folding rear seats and easy access. It's also good value and all models come very well equipped. It should be thought of as a '6+1' seater though - it does have seven seats but the central seat in the second row is narrow and uncomfortable. However solid build quality and typical Mazda reliability complete a strong package and make this an unsung hero among people carriers.

Equipment

Entry-level TS models are fitted with six airbags (including first, second and third-row curtain airbags), air conditioning, ABS with electronic brake force distribution and emergency braking assistance, electric front windows, electric/heated door mirrors, remote central locking, 15-inch steel wheels, a CD stereo with four speakers and an outside temperature gauge. TS2 variants add 16-inch alloys, electric rear windows, leather trimmed steering wheel with audio controls, driver's lumbar support, second row folding picnic tables, roof rails and body-coloured door handles and mirror housings. Sport versions are available only with the higher power engines and have 17-inch alloys, dynamic stability control and traction control, automatic climate control, front foglights, a six-CD autochanger, privacy rear and side glass, two extra audio speakers, a trip computer and aluminium interior door handles. From January 2008 range-topping Sport Nav models get a DVD-based sat nav system.
