Mazda Premacy (99-04) - Review

Review by Parkers on
Premacy has never really threatened the sales of the Renault Scenic or Citroën Xsara Picasso. The current version does little to change that. A 130bhp 2.0-litre engine adds pace to higher-spec versions, and there's a Sport model with spoilers and skirts.

Performance

The 115bhp 1.8 or the 2.0i engines both deliver brisk performance, although the 2.0 is the better choice for a full load. All units could be more refined and feel breathless when stretched. The 2.0 diesel performs best at cruising speeds.

Handling

Steering lacks feel and feedback and the gear lever is positioned too low for taller drivers. Softly-sprung, so it's comfortable over most surfaces. The downside is that the body lurches too much. Easy to drive, but a little van-like.
