Mercedes-Benz A-Class (05 on) - Review Review by David Ross on 25 March 2009 The A-Class is the smallest - and most affordable - model in the Mercedes line-up. As a small family car, it's an alternative to models like the Audi A3 or BMW 1-Series, but it's unusual upright styling makes it look more like a people carrier. It stands out, however that odd shape means it's not the most practical of cars - and rear space is limited, especially on three-door models. The five-door version is a better choice if you have kids. Build quality is good, as you'd expect from Mercedes - but the handling and comfort levels are a let down. Ultimately, while it's a huge improvement over the old A-Class, there are better and more affordable hatchbacks around. In mid 2008 it was facelifted with new headlights and bumpers plus an upgraded interior and more efficient engines. 3 out of 5 Other Mercedes-Benz reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery Also Consider 4.5 out of 5 BMW 1-Series Hatchback (04-11) Great to drive, excellent diesels, newer cars come with Efficient Dynamics Space in the rear is tight, styling not to everyones taste Read full review 3.5 out of 5 Volvo C30 (07 on) Distinctive styling, good choice of engines, low emissions DRIVe version available Poor rear passenger space, awkward to access boot with ugly load cover, steering lacks feel Read full review 4 out of 5 Audi A3 Hatchback (03 on) Supreme build quality, wide choice of engines, upmarket styling, refined on the move Not as good to drive as some rivals, modest standard kit levels Read full review Find other hatchback cars Car Valuations Find used car prices with Parkers accurate car valuations.
