Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate (08 on) - Review Review by Matthew Proud on 03 March 2008 Last Updated: 25 March 2009 The C-Class is a roomy, premium estate with high levels of comfort, safety and equipment. Competition is tough and its main alternatives are BMW’s versatile 3-Series Touring and Audi’s popular A4 Avant. However, the C-Class stands up well to both. It blends potent performance and good looks with interior refinement and a big boot. There’s a wide choice of engine, trim and transmission combinations available. It’s evident that Mercedes-Benz has thought the design through well and there are many practical solutions that make C-Class easy to live with, it's a shame then that the cabin lacks the upmarket feel you'd expect of a car with this price tag. 4.5 out of 5 Other Mercedes-Benz reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 4.5 out of 5 Comfort Mercedes-Benz has tried and succeeded to make longer journeys more comfortable by softening the seat cushions and improving back support plus all models come with dual-zone climate control. Air-flow is controlled via 16 adjustable vents located throughout the cabin. SE, Elegance and Sport each have tasteful, complementary and distinctive cloth and trim combinations, while the optional leather upholstery completes the interior with a high-quality finish. Both the rear armrest and centre console feature discreet storage for smaller items, such as keys, coins and mobile phones while hidey holes are lined with non-slip rubber to prevent valuables from rattling around. The glovebox is amply sized and there are numerous 12V power sockets dotted around the cabin. The rear tailgate is electrically powered and opens and closes using either the key fob, a button on the driver’s door or another above the number plate. The impressive 485-litre luggage capacity is bigger than its main alternatives plus four anchoring rings and two clever pop-out hooks secure goods on the way home. The steering wheel is manually adjustable for height and reach, while the driver’s seat can be electrically elevated for a better view of the road. Visibility isn’t bad, but the thick front pillars can obscure traffic at T-junctions. Available on all models, the multi-functional steering wheel allows drivers to control the stereo and make phone calls without taking their eyes off the road. The optional COMAND sat-nav system folds out and flips up from behind a panel on the dashboard at start-up. Though less impressive, the smaller LCD standard unit performs similar acrobatics. Neither offer touch-screen functionality and both are fiddly to use, though COMAND can be voice-activated and stores up to 1000 MP3 music files on its hard drive.
