Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon (07 on) - Review

Style is crucial among executive saloon buyers and it's no surprise that the C-Class is sleeker and sharper than before - with a hint of BMW 3-Series about it. Mercedes wants this generation of its saloon to appeal to younger buyers and this is evident in the neatly designed and unfussy interior. Good to drive, extremely comfortable and safer than ever, the Mercedes has a strong image and reputation behind it along with an excellent choice of petrol and diesel engines. The Audi A4 may be a better all-rounder but if you're after a premium saloon, the C-Class simply cannot be overlooked.

Buying new

Getting a discount on a new Mercedes is notoriously difficult and you'll have your work cut out even more if you're after a diesel model. The options list is lengthy and much of it pricey so it's worth choosing carefully. Options like sat nav and parking sensors will be useful when you come to sell but others like xenon headlights will make little difference. If you've owned the 2000-2007 C-Class, you'll notice that the latest car has different trim levels, SE is the entry level car and replaces Classic and Classic SE. Elegance takes the place Elegance SE and Avantgarde. Sport is a new trim with top spec and a sportier drive.

Buying used

There are two different looks to the SE/Elegance trims and Sport. The SE and Elegance models have a three dimensional grille and a traditional raised three-pointed star emblem on the bonnet. Sport models have three louvers in the grille and a large Mercedes-Benz badge on the front, but no star emblem. Cars registered after April 2008 benefit from Mercedes Mobilo roadside assistance. This is free for the first four years of ownership and - if your car is serviced at a Mercedes-Benz dealer - will cover the vehicle for up to 30 years.

Selling

As long as it has a full service history (Mercedes-Benz is preferred) and is sensibly priced, there should be no problem selling. Diesel models are the most popular, though there’s still a strong market for petrol models too.
