Mercedes-Benz CL (07 on) - Review

At the top of the Mercedes-Benz range you'll find the CL coupe. It sits alongside the S-Class saloon - on which it's based - as the most expensive model you can buy. And feels like it too. The CL600 now tops £100,000 to buy new and means that the CL takes on the likes of Aston Martin and Bentley for the first time. It's not short on anything: the interior is sumptuous, power is immense and it's a huge car capable of carrying four adults. But it lacks the image of other equally as expensive cars and doesn't feel as special either.

Safety

The CL has always been Mercedes-Benz's showcase for its cutting edge security features and this one continues that tradition. Although it's unlikely to get a Euro NCAP crash-test rating - it's rare for cars of this price to go through the test - it's fitted with a huge amount of features. PRE-SAFE Brake is new for the model. It detects and prepares for an impending accident by moving the passenger seat to the safest position, closing the windows and priming the brakes. It also partially brakes the car in extreme circumstances so if you so have a crash, it will be at a much lower speed. Security is excellent and there's keyless go on the CL600.

Reliability

Although Mercedes-Benz models lower down the range have suffered from declining standards in recent years, those near the top remain as expertly screwed together as they always have been. This model should continue the old model's impeccable reliability record.
