Mercedes-Benz chose a classically elegant design for the E-Class while BMW and Audi were preparing to launch more controversially styled rivals in the 5-Series and A6. It was the most technologically advanced Mercedes-Benz when it was launched in saloon form in 2002, but the reliability of early models was compromised by electrical problems. Otherwise the E-Class is easily a match for any rival for comfort, feels solid, and is exceptionally safe. Higher list prices than its rivals hurt its once peerless resale values - Mercedes-Benz might think the E-class is worth £2000 more than a 5-Series or A6, but used car buyers aren't prepared to pay such a big premium. Changes for 2006 promise to end the electrical problems of earlier cars, and add yet more technology, mainly for safety, as well as introduce new engines.
