Mercedes-Benz SLK AMG (04-10) - Review

Last time the Mercedes-Benz SLK received the AMG treatment, it was fitted with a supercharged 3.2-litre V6 engine. The second-generation gets a substantially larger V8. It may be badged 55 but it actually uses a normally aspirated 5.4-litre engine with 360bhp. However, thanks to the light weight of the roadster, it has superb acceleration and pace, making it great fun to drive. The extra AMG body kit and larger wheels suit the SLK shape well and it also has some exquisite detailing inside, while build quality is second to none. It's expensive to run, but as the ultimate SLK, it's a superb convertible.

Comfort

The cabin is roomier than in the previous SLK and thanks to excellent refinement and the metal folding roof, it's a convertible that can be driven all year round. Air conditioning is standard along with electrically adjustable seats and an electric steering column but the car is low, which means effort is needed to get in or out with your dignity intact. The seats are heated and it's well worth choosing the Airscarf feature from the options list - a vent below the head restraint blows warm air around your neck, allowing owners to take advantage of roof-down motoring all through the year. There is hardly any buffeting with the roof down up to about 60mph and a fabric wind deflector comes as standard. A more substantial wind deflector can be chosen as an option. Noise intrusion into the cabin is limited with the roof in place.

Practicality

The SLK has a minimum luggage capacity of 208 litres - the maximum available with the roof down. Used as a coupe it expands to 300 litres, which should be more than enough for a decent sized suitcase. Customers can also choose an external rack to carry more luggage outside the car if necessary. The SLK's compact dimensions make it relatively easy to park.

Behind the wheel

The SLK 55 AMG has a slightly sportier feel compared with the rest of the range thanks to some bespoke fittings, but it's shame it doesn't feel more special. On the plus side, the AMG sports seats are electrically adjustable and the steering column adjusts electrically for reach and height, so it's easy to get a good driving position. The instrument dials are clear and easy to read while the controls for the roof are located in front of the handbrake. Visibility is pretty good with the roof up, bearing in mind you sit quite low.
