MINI Convertible (04-08) - Review

Review by Parkers
Last Updated:
If there's one thing guaranteed to make a popular car more popular still, lopping off its roof is a sure fire bet. Unlike the old Mini which had a pram like contraption it called a roof this new model gets a two-stage work of engineering art. And if you don't fancy the full convertible mode, then it can be partially retracted at the touch of a button. A range of new colours are available and there's more scope to customise the interior than before.

Performance

The convertible doesn't quite follow the same engine line-up as the hatchback. You get the 1.6 - in both One and Cooper - outputs, as well as the supercharged Cooper S. But there's no diesel. Performance is slightly impaired compared to the standard MINI, but it's still good enough for bombing along country roads (and with the roof down, it's even better on a warm summer's evening).

Handling

The MINI's brilliant handling characteristics have been entirely preserved meaning quick responses, loads of grip and a rather bouncy ride which your passengers might not appreciate too much. A good chassis and electronic aids make it corner superbly and add to its sporty appeal.
