You can be forgiven for thinking at first glance that the Mitsubishi i is in fact a Smart car. You wouldn't be far off, as the two cars have more in common than just their looks.

Comfort

Despite its small dimensions, the rear of the i is surprisingly roomy and there's genuinely enough room for two adults in the back. The tall shape means that headroom is good, while leg and shoulder room are acceptable. Lots of glass means that it's light and bright inside. However, there's too much wind and road noise on faster roads and the seats are flat and lack support.

Practicality

The i is more practical than its city car dimensions suggest. The amount of bootspace with the seats up is enough for a couple of shopping bags. However, lift the tailgate and the opening is wide and square, which allows large items to be loaded. Plus with the seats folded flat, there's actually a decent amount of loadspace. Inside, there's a glovebox with reasonable capacity (and a built-in tissue-box holder), narrow door-bins and a few other small storage areas.

Behind the wheel

The seats have little shape, are narrow and aren't supportive. That means they quickly become uncomfortable on longer trips, though they are fine for town driving. Another irritation is that the immobiliser needs to be de-activated manually by pressing a small key-fob onto a button on the dash. Everything else from behind the wheel is pretty good with a stylish instrument cluster with a digital speedo. The large amount of glass and the high-up driving position ensure that all-round visibility is good.
