You can be forgiven for thinking at first glance that the Mitsubishi i is in fact a Smart car. You wouldn't be far off, as the two cars have more in common than just their looks.

The i hasn't been crash tested by Euro NCAP and is unlikely to be, due to the small number of cars that are being imported from Japan. However, it does have twin front airbags, Isofix child seat anchor points and ABS with electronic brake force distribution. There's little bonnet to speak of as the engine is at the rear of the car, though crumple zones at the front absorb the force of a front-on impact.

Reliability

Although the I has been on sale in Japan since January 2006, it only became available to UK buyers from July 2007. No major problems have yet been reported from either Japanese or British owners. It feels solidly built with a sturdy utilitarian interior.
