Mitsubishi Outlander (07 on) - Review

The second-generation Outlander is the best car Mitsubishi has produced in years. Nearly all models come with seven seats, making it a good choice for larger families, while the interior is well built and durable. There's plenty of cabin space, it's very good to drive and comes well equipped - even in entry-level trim. Unfortunately it isn't quite as refined or as practical as other offroaders with a narrow load space and a firm ride. The extra seats are also very cramped and offer little comfort. On the plus side, it's available with a 2.0-litre diesel engine from Volkswagen which offers strong performance and useful economy. The Citroen C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 are both based on the Outlander.

Buying new

The Outlander has a lower list price than its equivalents the Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser, plus it's the only one of the three to use the 2.0-litre diesel engine. Bear in mind that the entry-level Equippe model only has five-seats, so if you need to carry seven you'll have to move up to the Warrior model which is a few thousand pounds more expensive. However, a small discount should be achievable, although Mitsubishi dealers only have limited numbers of cars available to them each year.

Buying used

Used models will offer buyers a chance to miss out on the steepest part of the depreciation, but don't expect to find too many bargains. Medium specification Warrior models will be most common, which come with alloy wheels, Bluetooth, seven seats and side airbags. Avoid any cars that have been abused off road. The 2.4-litre model is best avoided as it's thirsty and only comes with an automatic gearbox.

Selling

Warrior models will be easier to sell because of the higher equipment level over the Equippe. The Warrior name may also be more recognised than Outlander as it's used on other Mitsubishi models like the L200 and Shogun. If you've got a 2.0-litre diesel model, use the fact that it's sourced from Volkswagen as a selling point.
