Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin (00-05) - Review

When it comes to the rough stuff, the multipurpose Shogun Pinin is a real RAV4 rival with proper 4x4 hardware including a low-ratio gearbox and a diff lock. It’s not bad on-road either; small enough to weave through urban congestion, with a reasonably composed ride and good all-round visibility, but is left wanting at higher speeds.

The robust Shogun Pinin has been designed to withstand most collisions, boasting a reinforced cabin for increased occupant protection and an energy absorbing front-end, which deliberately crumples to soak up the force of high impact accidents. Reassuringly, independent collision testing has shown that the Pinin’s body structure is one of the safest in its class, with the car receiving a commendable three-star Euro NCAP safety rating. All models get ABS and driver and passenger airbags whilst the five-door Elegance model also has side airbags. Finally, the electronic engine immobiliser ensures that it is tricky to steal, as the engine will only start if the key’s unique ID matches the corresponding computer code, which is stored in the immobiliser.

Reliability

The Mitsubishi standards of reliability are predictably high – as with most Japanese manufacturers - and it's unlikely to let you down. Do take care off-road; as despite its 4x4 pretence and sturdy confidence, it’s just not as tough as its bigger brothers. Off-road damage to the bodywork is often a sign of a poorly kept Pinin, so give the paintwork a good check over before parting with your cash.
