Nissan 370Z Coupe (09 on) - Review

Nissan is keeping to its tradition of building sharp handling and enjoyable to drive sports car with the 370Z. It takes over from the 350Z but despite being more refined and comfortable inside, is every bit as involving and characterful as its predecessor. With a rumbling V6 engine, heavy manual gearchange and low-slung driving position it's very much in the mould of an old-fashioned two-seater performance coupe. But it's also incredibly sophisticated with a top quality cabin and advanced safety systems. There's even a Synchro Rev Control system that keeps the engine revs at their optimum between gear shifts, adding to the sports feel. In terms of performance it competes with top end models like the Porsche Cayman, but it represents far better value for money and comes very well equipped too.

Buying new

Considering the performance, handling and equipment levels offered, the 370Z is superb value for money. Prices start at around £27,000 which seems a bargain compared to a Porsche Boxster or BMW Z4 - plus the Nissan has a better level of standard kit. It will always be desirable, so it's unlikely Nissan dealers will be willing to offer huge discounts while options are limited to metallic paint and the automatic gearbox.

Buying used

The 370Z is a superb used buy if you're after a useable and affordable sports car. It's worth going for the GT Pack version if you can afford it as it comes with key extras such as larger 19-inch alloys, suede and leather trimmed seats, a Bose stereo and Synchro Rev Control on manual cars. The latter has big appeal for driving enthusiasts.

Selling

If you have an automatic car this will be pretty rare, but it's unlikely to command much more than a manual, as most buyers prefer the standard gearbox. However, any 370Z will generate plenty of interest, even if it's an entry-level model as these can prove an affordable way into sports cars for many.
