Nissan Micra Hatchback (03-10) - Review

The Nissan Micra set a new standard for small cars when it was launched in early 2003, and it's still one of the best around today. The looks may not be to everyone's taste but it's well equipped, cheap to run and there are some neat features available (like keyless entry). It's cracking value too - whether you're buying new or used while light steering and good visibility make it easy to drive and park. All the engines are economical, especially the dCi models which can average more than 60mpg and the Micra makes a surprisingly good long distance car. It may not have the youthful image of rivals like the Mazda 2 or Ford Fiesta but it's still a good small car that's hassle-free and affordable to own.

Buying used

There are plenty of examples on the used market so take your time and don't rush into buying one. The trim levels can be a little confusing so make sure you know which is which (see equipment) - the base models are either E, Initia or Visia, depending on age. The diesels were launched a little later than the petrol models and aren't as common so expect to pay proportionally more for them. The 1.0-litre and 1.2-models are most common while Bluetooth is standard on Acenta spec and above from October 2007, along with an MP3 jack socket on all models.

Selling

The little Nissan is a popular used buy for those looking for a high value runabout as well as with first time drivers. A cared for and well equipped model should sell in no time while diesels are especially sought after.
