MG F 1.8i VVC 2d (1996/P)

MG F 1.8i VVC 2d (1996/P) - Owner Review

A little cracker, speedy into the corners though be careful in the wet as it's all to easy to loose the backend.

MG F (95-02)

Value

4 out of 5

Can be bought relatively cheap, you get a good nippy little sports car for good money.

Costs

1 out of 5

Ridiculous if you go to an MG main dealer. I got stung for them damaging my ABS and Speedo during a 60 month service. And make sure you remember that 60 month service, it costs approximatly £550 for the standard Cambelt change so beware!

Driving

4 out of 5

A little cracker, speedy into the corners though be careful in the wet as it's all to easy to loose the backend.

Performance

3 out of 5

Racey engine though it has a crunch like gear box which slows accelerating through the gearbox. What were MG thinking when they put it together?

Reliability

2 out of 5

I was lucky and had few problems with the engine though know of many friends who had problems with head gasket, gearbox, cambelt to name a few. Check the bodywork as is prone to rust round welding joins. Check under rear lights and under door frames.

A beauty to look at with some serious illnesses that go with it. It's a shame that MG struggled to perfect this little beauty.

Comfort

4 out of 5

Comfortable though if you're over 6ft 2 you will be pressing your head through the roof for sure. Plenty of legroom which is surprising. Enough boot space to get your Golf clubs in, believe it or not!

Security

5 out of 5

It's difficult to steal when you have the keys, let alone without them! There's a standard immobilser and two different alarms to keep peace of mind.

Service

1 out of 5

MG service were appauling and of absolutely no help. It was a case of thanks for your money we'll get back to you. Poor technical advice from local dealer and a bodge job on servicing. Find someone you trust is my advice.

Problems

Bodywork
Rusting bodywork on the welding joins. Bubbling of the paintwork which can cost a fortune to temporarily correct.

Engine
-

Gearbox
Poor gearbox that takes an age to select and you have to wrestle with the stick to get it into the next gear. Poor gearbox altogether.

Other
Poor trim, carpets pulling away from edges and not correctly stuck down. Poor attention to detail in the drivers cabin. Roof has small gaps behind driver and passenger seats which is a design fault. Roof was leaky on occassions of heavy rain etc.
