Summary
What does this car say about you?
I suspect people are indifferent to the car, but a tidy clean ones still looks presentable. I know I have a dependable and practical estate which shouldn't let me down - Toyota reliability is legendary.
What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?
Colleagues have commented on it, and suggested it looks older than it actually is. I really don't care what people think of me, otherwise I'd go and waste my money on a A4 estate.
Would you buy this car again and why?
The stereo is little low, the original item is a cassette player and the speakers are mounted under the dash - fine for Radio 4 but I like a little Prodigy every so often so I might have to look at MP3 + speaker options. Its reassuring to drive at night, the engine purrs nicely, the headlights are as good as many modern car. Seats are surprisingly comfy for a 6' 2" driver. I would consider a higher spec model, but they're getting thin on the ground.
What are you likely to buy next?
Not likely to get another Carina, the later E versions are bit bulky looking in my eyes but I would consider a Camry.

Driving it
What's it like to drive?
The fuel injected 16V is quite eager, the ride is smooth and the gearbox is a joy to use. The steering is lack a little feel. Overtaking is not generally an issue and cruises nicely at 70mph. Interior noise is impressive, with a little noise from the tyres being the main problem. I've resolved this with quality tyres and after market alloys. The engine warms up quickly although it is a little hesitant at low speeds - perhaps aservice will rectify this. It deals with potholes reasonable well, but wallows a little when cornering, but you have to accept this is not a sports car!
What's it like to park?
The turning circle is pretty good for a large FWD car, but due to the rear overhang, it needs some practice parking to get used to!

Living with it
Have you had any problems with the car?
The main reason why people buy Toyotas is because nothing should go wrong with it! If I have to be picky the coolant gauge is reading a little too low after a long journey - I'll replace it with a quality approved thermostat.
What's most practical about your car?
The estate version is well sized, vision inside is generally good, although if you don't need the back seats I would advise that you remove the rear head restraints. Compared to newer generations of estate cars, its low, so getting in and out takes a little more effort.
Favourite gadget, option or accessory?
The electric sunroof is useful - a quality item that has been well thought out. The interior sunroof cover slides, to provide some welcome light into the cabin - its a little sombre. All controls are within easy reach.
