Peugeot 206 Coupé Cabriolet (01-07) - Review

Review by Dan Harrison on
When it was launched, the 206CC had the small roadster market sewn up. Now its age is starting to show: the driving position is nothing short of peculiar, there are questions over its build quality and it's very cramped inside. Rivals can match - or beat - its status as a fashion accessory and many have copied its favourite party trick - the metal folding roof. But there are more 206CCs around than other small roadsters, both in the car supermarkets and used markets, so finding one at a knock-down price shouldn't be too difficult.

Comfort

A noisy car at most speeds, even with the roof up - engine tyre and wind noise are all apparent, and it only gets worse with the roof down. The rear seats are only acceptable for the smallest of children or shopping bags; there's very little legroom and the sloping roof means there's almost no headroom. If you're thinking of it as a two seater for the majority of the time, it makes better sense, with lots of room for the front passenger.

Practicality

There's a rather large boot (although the space is significantly reduced when the roof's down) and you can use the rear two seats for mammoth shopping sprees. That versatile roof gives the best of both worlds - coupe and convertible - which is perfect for British weather; it lowers and folds away in under 30 seconds.

Behind the wheel

A very poor driving position. The pedals are grouped very closely together and slightly off-set. This means that a driver with big feet will find it difficult to find the right pedals. With the roof up, all-round visibility is bad - there's only a small screen at the back and chunky windscreen pillars at the front restrict the view when pulling out of T-junctions. Most of the buttons and switches are where you'd expect them and easy to reach, though the heater controls can be a little fiddly.
