Peugeot 207 Hatchback (06 on) - Review

The 207 is proof that Peugeot is still capable when it comes to small cars. It's roomy, well equipped, attractively styled and comes with strong petrol and diesel engines. It's also good to drive with sharp steering and good body control - however it's not as refined as alternatives like the Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa while the sloppy five-speed gearbox is disappointing. The boot capacity trails behind other small cars too. However the 207 (available as both a three and five-door) is good value for money and safe too. If you're in the market for a small hatchback the Peugeot is certainly worth checking out.

Comfort

The 207 has a light and attractive cabin with some quality materials and a modern design. The controls are clearly laid out but the stereo switches are a little fiddly. The seats are comfortable though and offer enough support for longer journeys, however space in the back is modest - there's not enough head or leg room for three adults, but it's fine for a couple of children. On the whole it's quiet on the road, with just a small amount of engine noise at speed.

Practicality

It's easier to access the rear of the five-door than the three, as is the case with most hatchbacks. There's an average-sized glovebox with sub compartments (which act as a coolbox on air-conditioned models), a couple of cupholders and door bins. The boot is also only average, capable of carrying two large suitcases but on the plus side the seats split 60/40 and it's possible to remove the bases of the seats and fold the seat backs down so the boot floor is flush with the backs of the seats. However this process isn't as quick - or easy - as more flexible alternatives like the Honda Jazz.

Behind the wheel

The attractive dash is clear and easy-to-use while the driving position is excellent, with a highly adjustable driver's seat and a steering wheel that adjusts for height and reach (which isn't the case on the 206). However, although improved over the 206, the pedals are too close together. Much attention has been paid to the look of the instrument dials, which are chrome ringed while a large amount of glass means all-round visibility is excellent and gives a pleasant and airy feel - something that can be increased with the optional Panoramic extra-large sunroof.
