Peugeot 208 Hatchback (12 on) - Review Review by Tim Bowdler on 14 Mar 2012 Last Updated: 04 Apr 2013 3.5 The Peugeot 208 hatchback has every chance of becoming a firm favourite with small hatchback buyers. It’s smart, efficient and practical. We wouldn’t recommend the semi-automatic EGC models because they are not particularly good, and they won’t add any value when you come to resell. Don’t bother upgrading to bigger alloys either, because they compromise the ride. Although the diesels may seem attractive, because of the higher fuel economy, we think the petrols are the best option - particularly the 82bhp 1.2-litre. Although it's little unrefined, it's great around town. The petrols will be cheaper to buy, and unless you are doing a lot of motorway miles, we don’t expect the diesels will achieve anywhere near the official combined fuel economy. You will get better resale values with the diesels, however, but not so much to make their purchase worth it as the equivalent petrol model will be cheaper. Peugeot says its dealers are unlikely to offer discounts but if you remember that the French car maker wants to sell this car in sizeable numbers it’s absolutely worth chancing your arm in the showroom. Cars that have climate control and the touchscreen will be easier to sell. However, the French car maker says resale values will be in the same league as the 508 saloon because it is building stronger cars. Still, it’ll be a buyer’s market because it will sell in huge numbers, so make sure the car you are buying has a full service history. Avoid anything that looks like it had problems with electrics – they could resurface and could be a constant problem later on. There will be plenty of 208s for sale, so keeping yours in the best possible condition will help it stand out when the time comes to sell it. If your car has been poorly maintained, or it’s in a lower spec with no air conditioning, be prepared to lower your asking price. It's worth considering getting any minor kerbing marks or paint damage corrected before you advertise the car, too. Many buyers will be put off by a car that looks like it has been well used.
