Peugeot Expert Tepee (07 on) - Review

Large people carriers have often been mocked in the past for being little more than vans with windows. While this might be a little unfair to sophisticated vehicles like the Renault Espace and Ford Galaxy, it's an efficient way of moving large number of people. Peugeot's Expert Tepee is actually based on a van - the Expert. While this means a boxy shape, it also results in good versatility thanks to a flat floor, a choice of lengths and seats for up to nine. Few sacrifices have to be made on board either, as the Tepee comes with most of the kit you would expect on a people carrier. Developed jointly with sister company Citroen and Fiat, the Citroen Dispatch Combi and Fiat Scudo Panorama are near identical vehicles.

Comfort

There is plenty of room for occupants, although in six or nine-seat versions, the two sharing the twin front passenger seat might feel crowded. A single front passenger seat is a no-cost option. Air conditioning is only standard on the higher specification Leisure model, although both Comfort and Leisure come with electric windows. Access is easy through the sliding rear passenger doors and refined engines offer minimal noise intrusion.

Practicality

The smallest Tepee offers 283 litres of luggage space up to the parcel shelf behind the third row seats. The long wheelbase offers a minimum of 553 litres. Whether you choose a Tepee with two or three rows of seats luggage space becomes vast with the seats removed because you're turning it back into a medium-sized panel van. The seats aren't that easy to remove however, as they're pretty bulky and heavy. There's useful cabin storage though, including an open compartment on top of the dashboard as well as overhead storage. Models with the bench-style front passenger seat have extra under-seat storage.

Behind the wheel

The Tepee feels fairly sophisticated from the driving seat. Leisure specification models come with velour-covered seats while contrasting colours on the dashboard make the Tepee a pleasant environment in which to travel. The steering adjusts for height and reach and large door mirrors ensure good rearward visibility. The finish and quality of materials is pretty good, although you're always aware that this is a van-based people carrier and it lacks the sophistication of some other large family vehicles.
