Proton Impian (01-07) - Review

Proton's largest model is also the first to be designed and built in-house by the Malaysian firm. Even so, Lotus (part-owned by Proton) has given them more than a helping hand with the ride and handling, which are very good. The 1.6 engine is frugal but unrefined, so needs to be worked to get the most from it.

Performance

Just one engine available, a Mitsubishi-sourced 1.6 petrol. It's surprisingly frugal (42mpg on the combined cycle), although it's noisy, needs to be worked hard and struggles to get up to motorway speeds.

Handling

Proton left this to Lotus - and they've done a good job. It's a responsive car to drive, with little roll, direct steering and plenty of grip. Ride quality is better than you would expect - far better than older Protons.
