Summary***--

  • Fun to drive, decent diesel engines, good value as a used buy
  • Not particularly spacious inside, new Clio is far superior, low rent interior on early cars

Stylish, chic and enjoyable to drive, the Renault Clio is a superb little hatchback that has proved hugely popular. Despite the introduction of a new model, Renault continues to sell the this Clio as a budget model - badged the Clio Campus. It makes little sense as a new buy, you're better off paying extra for an entry-level version of the newer car, but as a used buy it represents good value. There's a good choice of engines available and a seemingly endless (almost baffling) number of trims and special editions. Early cars had a fairly cheap feeling interior but this was improved in a 2001 facelift which also saw the Clio given a fresh front end. The driving position isn't the best and tall drivers will find there's a lack of headroom but the Renault is still fun to drive with keen handling and a good ride.
