Renault Clio Hatchback (05 on) - Review Review by Simon Harris on 29 September 2005 Last Updated: 11 November 2010 The latest Clio is one of the best small cars around in terms of cabin room thanks to a long wheelbase which means excellent rear passenger space. It's also very refined and comfortable helped by good noise insulation, quiet engines and a cosseting ride. A maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash rating means it's incredibly safe too. Cabin quality is much improved over the previous Clio and the design and finish have an upmarket feel that few alternatives can match. The previous generation Clio is still sold as an entry-level version of the model - but is now badged as Clio Campus. In May 2009 the model was significantly facelifted with a different front end, improvements to the steering and a new sporty GT model. 4 out of 5 Other Renault reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 3 out of 5 Buying new When buying be sure this traditional three-door/five-door fulfils your needs, as the more versatile Renault Modus is only a few hundred pounds more and there is also an estate version (called Sport Tourer). Insistence on a large discount might result in the salesman steering you towards the cheaper second-generation Clio (now called Clio Campus) which continues as an entry-level model. But this newer model is far superior and worth the extra. Car supermarkets are another place to look but avoid entry-level models or those with high miles. Diesel versions are better if you plan on covering more than town miles although the petrols (with the exception of the 2.0-litre) are all very economical. If you’re after the facelifted model these were introduced in May 2009 so will only be available on an 09-plate or later. Pre-facelifted models will also be cheaper to buy used. It should be easy to sell - especially to those who have just passed their tests. The well equipped Dynamique models are the most sought after while the dCi models will always be able to command a premium over a similar spec petrol car.
