Since the launch of the original model in 1990, some 11.5 million Renault Clios have been sold in more than 115 countries and this, the fourth-generation version promises more technology, improved efficiency, better driving dynamics and, potentially, greater popularity with UK car buyers.

The options

The new Renault Clio is only offered in five-door form and the svelte design features integrated rear door handles concealed close to the rear quarter lights, sits lower and is wider. Buyers can choose from eight body colours and can personalise their car with a selection of options including door mirror housings, grille bars, rear panel skirts, lower door protectors and wheel finishes, as well as a choice of roof graphics. To create a more bespoke interior, there is a menu of options regarding the dashboard, door panels, steering wheel, grab handles, gear lever surround, air vent surrounds, upholstery materials and optional floor mats.

New tablet technology

Perhaps more importantly the new car will feature Renault R-Link – an integrated tablet connected to the car and internet that is also available as an option. This features a seven-inch touchscreen and a satnav with traffic updates. The system also links to Renault R-Link Store, the automobile world’s first ever Application Store, where users can view or download a range of apps from their car or computer. R-Link users can also check their messages, manage their diary, locate the nearest service station or place to park, or send a tweet.

New engines

The engine range features a three-cylinder 899cc petrol engine with two power outputs (Energy TCe 90 and TCe 120). It features stop/start and an ultralow-inertia turbo producing 89bhp and 135Nm at 2,000rpm – and it returns a claimed average of 65.6mpg with CO2 emissions of 99g/km. This represents a 21% fuel consumption and CO2 emissions saving compared to the TCe 100 it replaces.

There’s also a new 89bhp version of the 1.5 dCi, equipped with stop/start. It is a four-cylinder 1.5-litre diesel engine with 220Nm of torque available from 1,750rpm - an increase of 20Nm over the current dCi 85 - and returns 88.2mpg with CO2 emissions of 83g/km.

The other diesel (available in 2013) is a new four-cylinder 1.2-litre TCe 120 paired with six-speed EDC automatic transmission producing 118bhp and 190Nm of torque from 1,750rpm. What owners say...

Small engine car - 900cc, but drives the same as my 2010 1.4 megane. Plenty of space for a small hatchback.

Great fuel economy. Every time I get in my car it makes me smile because it is so sleek and responsive as well as totally practical for a family of 4..

Hidden 5 doors. Looks like a 3 door. Deceptively large car, somewhere between a Fiesta and a Focus.
